Maria Klein-Schmeink, born in 1958, worked in adult education for about 20 years after her stud-ies in sociology, political science and pedagogy in Münster, from 1990 in a leading position. Since 1993, she has played a major role in shaping green politics and urban policy in Münster for three legislative periods, latest serving as parliamentary party leader. In 2002, she joined the political group of the Green Party (Alliance90/The Greens) in the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia as an advisor for labor, social affairs and health, and later for local politics and labor market policy.
Since 2009, she is a member of the national parliament where she held the position as speaker for prevention and patient rights, and since the 18th legislative period as speaker for health policy.
